SRO Bill Misguided

to the editor:

this bill ("lawmakers move to close hotel loophole," july 1) is grossly misdirected. it will not help to provide affordable housing because no landlord in his right mind would rent a single-room-occupancy unit to a permanent tenant for $300 to $400 a month, to include legally mandated hotel services such as linen and cleaning services and front desk services. without transient rentals, sro buildings lose money! oppressive sro laws shift the burden of subsidizing low-income tenants from the city to the landlords. instead of pandering for votes, our politicians should be more concerned about maintaining a healthy real estate tax base for the city of new york.
