The First Week of School
We visited a downtown elementary school to chat with students
Labor day has come and gone, which means school is back in session. Our Town Downtown took a trip to P.S. 130 on Baxter Street to hear what kids are saying about their first week back. We caught up with kindergarteners Maggie, Gian and Tristan, and sisters Anna (fourth grade) and Dulce (fifth grade) to talk about their return for another year of lessons.
Anna Duran, 4th grade
OTDT: Do you like 4th grade?
Anna: Yes.
OTDT: What's your favorite part of 4th grade?
Anna: I like when the teacher gives us homework.
OTDT: What's your favorite subject?
Anna: I like writing.
OTDT: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Anna: A pediatrician or a model.
OTDT: What are you learning in school?
Anna: We are going to learn science because we have the 4th grade science test. I want to learn about Math because I'm not good at that yet. We're going to divide fractions.
OTDT: What do you like best about school?
Anna: We don't have recess, but sometimes they take us up to a roof on the playground. We have a jungle gym.
Dulce Duran, 5th grade
OTDT: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Dulce: I probably want to be a veterinarian when I grow up.
OTDT: What do you like best about school?
Dulce: I like that my teacher is nice. My teacher was strict last year. Just because I forget to do my homework she won't punish me. I'm allergic to homework.
OTDT: What's your favorite part of school?
Maggie The top part!
OTDT: What do you like so far about school?
Maggie: I like to play. I like computer games.
(Maggie also told us that she's made friends but she doesn't know their names yet.)
OTDT: What do you like so far about your school?
Gian: I like gym, actually computers. I play games. We haven't gotten to gym yet. I like basketball.
(Gian likes to read, but doesn't know how yet.)
OTDT: What do you like about school so far?
Tristan: I like playing with toys. I play table toys. I like Legos. I played with the Lego people today.
OTDT: Who are your friends in school?
Tristan: Uhhh Layla.
OTDT: Is she your best friend?
Tristan: Uhhh Ariel.
(Tristan wants to be teacher when he grows up.)
