One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Pleasure

Henry Melcher -
Tomorrow kicks off Volume 4 of the Found Footage Festival, featuring four shows of found video clips and live comedy (and also free beer!). Henry Melcher spoke with curator Nick Prueher about foulmouthed RV salesman, 1980s dating videos and other things to expect from this weekend’s festivities.

Bird Watching

Henry Melcher -
Tonight Wildbirds & Peacedrums, which is actually just one band, is playing at Le Poisson Rouge. The Swedish husband-and-wife band will be bringing its slightly spooky pop—as seen on its recent album The Snake—to a slot opening for Deerhoof, and as Henry Melcher finds out, it would be smart to get there early.

God's Comedy

Henry Melcher -
Gideon Lamb (Krister Johnson) and Jeremiah Smallchild (Wilson Hall) will be spreading their message—hell, Christ’s message—with a party in honor of their new book on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Comix. The musical duo has been strumming and singing together for years and now they’re back in New York, which they call an ironic town, to teach us about hot button issues like drugs, alcohol and your “downstairs area.”  Henry Melcher, as pure an intern as we have, spoke with the holy men about their show, new book and an unfortunate night of “binge drinking.”

Choose Your Own Misadventure

Henry Melcher -

“You are a fugitive from the law.” But, you are a polite fugitive. Regardless of how nice of a person you are, you find yourself in the Port Authority Bus Terminal trying to evade the police. This is how an adult version of the childhood"Your Own Adventure" game created by Rudolph Delson begins. The game is both funny and a little bit moving (if you play your cards right).

Dems Dance to Donna Summer

Henry Melcher -
It seems that every Democrat running for office right now is looking to get a little boost from an unlikely source: Donna Summer. City Room is reporting that the music icon headlined the 31st annual Seaside Summer Concert Series last night and just about every Democrat running for office made an appearance. Dems running for mayor, comptroller and public advocate all stopped by the event to pander as much as possible and/or relive their glory disco days.

Bullshit is Green

Henry Melcher -
Apparently, people are “going green” not for Al Gore or the planet, but simply to save some green of their own. True/Slant informed us about a survey of 300,000 consumers that found only 8% of consumers say the environment is why they shop green while 59% mention the economy.

Only 4 Phone Booths Left in Manhattan

Henry Melcher -
It’s been quite some time since muscleman Carrot Top yelled “1-800-CALL-ATT” in those constantly repeating commercials. Thanks to cell phones, the public phone has almost become an antique in less than a decade. Yes, there are still public phones lining the streets, but they are mostly used as bathrooms as they provide the privacy that men need. Save for the pool of urine on the sidewalk.

Yankee Stadium Offers Local Produce from the West Coast

Henry Melcher -
While sports fans can still buy beer, hot dogs and other typical ballpark food at Yankee Stadium, the new place offers a fruit stand with fresh produce. The New York Times piece "Buy Me Some Peanuts and Nectarine" explains that while the fruit is certainly not cheap, it has been very popular with the fans that don’t usually eat the food at a game.

Temporary Skatepark Opens...Inside a Store

Henry Melcher -

Bring your skateboard, dark jeans and messy hair over to the skate store Autumn to experience their temporary indoor skate park. The attraction which is also hosted by Quicksilver will, just like Hanukkah, last for eight days and is open to the public, but there will be two special attractions before Saturday.

Plane Crashes Outside JC Penney. Let the Conspiracy Theories Begin!

Henry Melcher -

A flight instructor and his student must really love the sweet deals at JC Penney, because they decided to crash their plane into one of the retail store’s parking lots. Gothamist reports that a single-engine plane that left from Essex County Airport crashed within 100 yards of a JC Penney in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall. Both people in the plane walked away from the crash relatively unharmed. Apparently there were problems with the plane’s engine, but then again the store does boast “The Lowest Prices for Back to School” so obviously there was some incentive.
