Sexy Beasts

Will Alden -
As I tried to exit the Soho Playhouse last night after seeing the captivating Harold Pinter Pair, an old man, gleefully oblivious to the crowd behind him, stood in the doorway and shouted to a companion, "That's what theater used to be! Mystery! Young playwrights don't know shit!" The man was like a Pinter character himself—maniacal, menacing, spiteful and passionate—or perhaps I just saw him that way, since the pair of one-acts had so affected me. In any case, I agreed with him.

Late Great Wall

Neighbors around NYU have discovered that the university surreptitiously demolished part of a wall of the historic Provincetown Playhouse, which it was attempting to preserve while building a new structure around it. The project supervisors Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, and Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President, are irate.

Bite At The Museum

Morgan Freeman smiled slightly as I entered Madame Tussauds to try Screme Gelato, the Israeli-Italian gelateria that opened here in July. Freeman, though he was made of wax, had reason to be happy. The gelato is damn tasty.

The End of the Affair?

Chris Jacobson paced back and forth behind the counter at Cinema Nolita, occasionally ducking into the bathroom for sips of water. Jacobson has worked at the video rental store for over three years. He was around when the neighborhood rental shop moved from Elizabeth Street to its current Mulberry Street location last year. And now he’s trying to prevent Cinema Nolita from going under.
