Be A Trash Collector!

$400 will get you a brand new pair of designer jeans that are so worn everyone will think you’ve had them since you were in diapers (score!), but the latest clothing trend is much cheaper. A frayed, brown baseball cap emblazoned with the Sanitation Department’s light blue logo is the new must have—sold at Target stores nationwide. [Along with the Sanitation Department, the NYPD and FDNY also have a line of merchandise], all part of Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to profit from the city’s official landmarks and logos. This trend isn’t particularly new. But typical annual profits usually reach about $1 million. Not so in the year following 9/11, when the city’s workers became world-wide celebs and profits grossed $28 million.  In 2006, it was down to $20 million, which is still a lot of dough for a only part of a Sanitation Department worker costume, and we can thank NYC Marketing’s ingenius plan to get in on the celebrity worshipping craze. This time we’re not talking about local sanitation workers. The likes of Martin Scorsese, Nick Lachey, Liv Tyler, James Gandolfini and Jamie-Lynn Sigler have all been photographed wearing and buying our special items.
