Bloomberg to Corzine: Wear Yo’ Seatbelt!

Yesterday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave NJ Gov. Jon Corzine some [valuable post-car wreck advice]: “Let’s hope Gov. Corzine recovers and gets back to work, but it is a wake-up call for all of us to make sure you put on the seat belt,” said Bloomy. He then explained how in his car he had two stickers affixed to the backs of his front seats reminding passengers to buckle up. Pretty clever, huh? “I don't think [using lights and sirens] for an elected official who wants to get someplace for a photo op is appropriate,” he added.

Last Thursday, Corzine, 60, was on his way from Atlanta City to a Princeton meeting with Don Imus and the Rutgers women’s basketball team when his SUV, said to have been going 91 mph, crashed. He suffered several broken bones and is now hospitalized in critical but stable condition. But the real tragedy is that he didn’t get to hear Don’s wife, Deirdre Coleman Imus, overcompensate for her husband’s faux pas: “We met for several hours, and that was the most important thing—to meet with [young, beautiful women] … and these women are unbelievably courageous and beautiful.” OK, we get it already.

Meanwhile, Bloomy wasn’t making any friends in the Church of Scientology yesterday, either. In response to a councilman’s public announcement that the [city would honor Tom Cruise and Scientology founder] L. Ron Hubbard for their roles in promoting a detoxification program for 9/11 rescue workers, the Mayor had this to say: “I don't think it's appropriate to do that” and “I think that reputable scientists do not think Scientology has any basis in science. It may be a cult, it may be a religion, it may be beliefs. It’s other things, but it’s not science, and we should only fund those programs that reputable scientists believe will stand the light of day and the scientific method.” Oh man, we hope Bloomberg buckles up and watches his back.
