Gene Linked to Alzheimer's
[A gene linked to Alzheimers disease has been found] through a study of Dominican immigrants living in Upper Manhattan. Led by Dr. Richard Mayeux of Columbia University, the study found that the families have about three times the usual incidence of Alzheimers, an incurable brain disorder thats the [top cause of dementia in the elderly](http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070115/wl_canada_nm/canada_alzheimers_gene_col_1). The Dominican Republic proved a worthy source for the study because it offers a single, long-isolated population in which variant genes are easier to detect. With the help of three colleagues, Mayeux found that gene SORL1 showed distinguishing markers in those who suffered form Alzheimers. Hopefully, this will lead to better treatment so that you don't have to watch your loved ones plunge into a catatonic state of confusion. Sure, all you sociopaths out there might enjoy watching Aunt Suzy's blank expression as you tell her you knocked up your brother's girlfriend whom you recently discovered is also your father's mistress and you mother's sister - but that isn't reason enough to keep Alzheimer's patients in the dark. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
