Mets Finally Win

After collapsing [faster than Senator John McCain’s presidential bid] this summer, the New York Mets finally won a game on Wednesday, [downing the Washington Nationals](http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270919120&action=playvideo&hcmp=motion) 8-4. The Mets entered the contest on a [five-game losing streak](http://www.nypress.com/blogx/display_blog.cfm?bid=63174125), and their NL-East lead had shrunk from seven games to just two since last Thursday. But following their victory and a [Philadelphia loss last night](http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270919124), the Mets could breathe a little easier this morning.

David Wright (pictured) helped halt the Mets’ skid, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double in the win. Moises Alou contributed three hits, two runs and an RBI as well, and extended his hitting streak to 23 games. The Mets’ defense was still shoddy, committing three more errors and bringing their four-game total to a team-record 13 miscues, but the offensive explosion was enough to overcome their defensive shortcomings.

Before the game, catcher Paul Lo Duca, who drove in two runs, told the media he wanted to “see what we’re made of.” For one night at least, it appeared the Mets were constituted of enough backbone to maybe hold onto this lead during the final two weeks. Of course, they were playing the last-place Nationals, so let’s not get too excited.
