The Gas Has Passed

The gaseous odor that hung over the city yesterday was gone this morning, but officials are still trying to find its source. [A spokesman for the city Department of Environmental Protection, Charles Sturcken], said today that, based on wind currents, his agency was fairly sure that the smell was coming from New Jersey. Specifically, he blamed the industrialized waterfront just across the Hudson River from New York. Ah-ha! This will only make it harder for those who belovedly call Jersey the Garden State and deny its stinky reputation. Sturcken told AP, "We're left with a mystery, although we know it's not harmful," he said. Well, phew.
