Today, the office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation (SCI) for the city school district released its annual report outlining just how many cases it handled in 2006, and what those cases meant.

In 2006, SCI received 2,552 total complaints, up 38% from 1,849 in 2005. When it came to sexual abuse reports, always the greatest fear of any parent sending their child into the arms of strangers every morning, the office saw an increase of 9.71% last year to 576, up from 525 in 2005.

Of those 576 cases, SCI substantiated the charges in a total of 86, actually down from the 92 the substantiated in 2005.
