George McDonald Eying a Republican Run for Mayor (Though He's a Major Dem Donor)

When Doe Fund President George McDonald meets the GOP borough chairs on Thursday about a run for New York City mayor on the Republican line, he'll have some explaining to do ? including the more than $100,000 he has donated to Democratic candidates since 2001. Over $80,000 went to Andrew Cuomo, mostly for his gubernatorial bid, while records show McDonald hasn't donated to Republicans over the same period. "I was not aware of his contributions history per se, but that is certainly something that will be brought up, I can tell you that," said Dan Isaacs, chairman of the Manhattan Republicans. "My colleagues and I have an obligation to meet with any credible candidate who's look for running for mayor. I can promise you that those contributions will be raised and we'll see what he has to say." Isaacs said he would also ask about reports on McDonald's family members working at the Doe Fund, McDonald's nonprofit that helps the homeless. The Daily News reported in 2010 that he made close to $500,000 in 2008, while his wife and son also earned six-figure salaries there. McDonald did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
