Lower East Side- When Greg Masters first came to the Lower East Side as a young poet in 1975, the community was known as much for its burning buildings, squatter communities and junkyards as it was for its recent past as a hot spot for the Beat generation. Over the next decade a new generation of young artists, attracted by low rents and a burgeoning art scene, descended on the East Village.
