For 13 years, Safeta Djesevic has been the star office cleaner for the Manhattan branch of Banco Popular North America, at 120 Broadway. "I am sure I speak for a number of us," said William A. Lucy, a former employee at the bank, "She was always at the top of the list to be retained. She was always as professional in what she did as what we did as bankers, accountants and analysts." Lucy said that Djesevic was more like part of their team at the bank, or a friend. Djesevic immigrated to New York from the former Yugoslavia in 1992 with her husband and eldest child. The first job she got was at a bakery, but shortly after, she took the job with Control Cleaning, the company she still works for. "When I worked with those people they teach me English, reading and writing," Djesevic said, with her heavily accent, of the bank employees. "When I came here I didn't speak English." She now lives in Queens with her husband and three children, Almedina, 18, Anela, 14 and Anel, 11. In her free time, she spends time with her family, though the oldest she just sent off to college in Buffalo, N.Y. The bank employees, Djesevic said, try help her out with her kids' homework. "I have a lot of fun with them," she said of the employees, "so I try to clean to make them satisfied." Between collecting trash, polishing windows and dusting, the 41-year-old Djesevic said she couldn't recall any major complications at her job. Finally, after thinking a bit, she said the hardest part for her was vacuuming. But, she added, "I love it, of course I like it-I support my kids from my job." Lacy said Djesevic has been the most conscientious and trustworthy office cleaner he's met in the 25 years he has been in the banking business. "Her warmth and kindness to everyone makes her a trusted co-worker and friend to all at the bank," he said. Lucky for everyone at the bank, she doesn't want any other job.
