U-turns on Canal Street are a normal sighting by locals, but yesterday this illegal maneuver created a three car accident and ultimately lead to a car crash into a souvenir shop. At around 5:30 p.m., Tuesday afternoon, a black Mercedes was allegedly seen making a u-turn but then hit a green Subaru station wagon from behind. The station wagon then clipped another vehicle before careening onto the curb and driving into a tourist-centered trinket shop at 314 Canal Street near Mercer. According to witnesses at the scene and news reports, the driver and passenger of the Mercedes, a man and a woman, fled the scene of the accident, but then returned and were taken in by police. The female driver of the Subaru, however, was reportedly in bad shape. According to the Post, the woman "started having a seizure and her foot was still on the gas." FDNY noted that the woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Charges are apparently pending for the driver of the Mercedes.
