A CENTURY OF SERVICE
By [Allen Houston] St. Ignatius Loyola Parish"s Day Nursery celebrated a centennial of service to East Side residents with a special mass and celebration Sept. 25 at the school, located at 240 E. 84th St. The program started out of a small house near the church in 1910 and moved to its present location five years later, when Nicholas Frederic Brady, president of the New York Edison Company and owner of dozens of other companies, dedicated land and funding for the five-story Gothic Revival cast-stone structure. Over the years, the school has been home to orphans and three orders of nuns. Today, it serves children of all income levels and is comprised of lay teachers. â??This school is blessed with a faithful community, family, alumni and friends, said Catherine Skurka, director of development for the Day School.
