All Cap Signs a Waste of Money

To The Editor: Pray tell, who is the genius in the Federal Highway Administration who came up with the idea of changing all the street signs in the city from all caps to lowercase at the cost of $27 million, citing â??improved visibility ? That"s bull, or if I may use a more polite term, bovine residue. First, let me give my credentials. Before my retirement, I was an executive vice-president of a Madison Avenue advertising agency specializing in print advertising. (Yes, I was a â??Mad Man of the "50s and "60s.) Now it may be harder to reader all-caps signs only when they occupy two or more lines, but I maintain it is easier to read all-caps when occupying one line, simply because the letters are larger. And, unless I"m mistaken, all street signs occupy one line, usually one or two words. (Have you ever seen a street sign occupying two lines?) In my informed opinion, the city is flushing 27 million bucks down the toilet. I hope ill-conceived and dopey ideas like this are not a sign of the times. Joe Morrone East 75th Street
