Bash Compactor: Easy Being Green

Musicians: Is there anything they can’t do? They save Africa. They act. And some even paint.

Adam Green, he of the Moldy Peaches, has expanded his repertoire to include painting, sculpting and collage making, and a private opening party for his debut art show (titled Teen Tech) was held at the Morrison Hotel Gallery last Thursday night.

The crowd was sparse when I first arrived, but started to fill up after an hour or so, as patrons took in the brightly colored paintings and sculptures. Images of handcuffed monkeys and tanks, ninja turtles and Ren and Stimpy-like characters splashed across the canvases.

Then there was the back segment of the show. Tiger-Dick Shadowz is a collaboration between Green and Cory Kennedy. These were images from magazines with Perez Hiltonesque drawings on them, including dicks and a glamour shot of a model with the phrase “friend request accepted” on her head. They cost $125 each.

Kennedy herself was in attendance, looking slightly stoned and being incredibly sweet. She was kind enough to answer my questions about how this collaboration came to be.

“I was at Max Fish and just started making out with Adam,” she said. “We became inseparable, eating at diners in the West Village every day and drawing on whatever we saw. I don’t know why Adam kept them.”

Green, clad in a studded leather jacket and what looked like an old admiral’s hat, had a different story about how everything came about. “She was modeling in my apartment for a while, it’s called jam modeling.”

Indeed, Green had a smart-ass answer to everyone question I shot at him.

The meaning behind his work? “It’s an antigovernment message. It’s punk as fuck. Kill your parents and don’t believe in ghosts.”

His methods? “I learned how to do the paper-mché, technology thing from the Internet. I guess that explains why kids are so stupid today.” The prevalence of dicks? “Cory’s obsessed.” And lastly, I asked about his plans for the future. “I quit music,” Green said. “I’m going to pursue sexual conquests.”
