    gloria steinem, who helped define the modern view of feminism, was honored by the city council for her years as an advocate of women. council speaker christine quinn and council member gale brewer presented the award. "it was a unique and special day," brewer said. "she had been honored by women's groups, but she had never been honored by the city before for being a resident." steinem, who recently turned 75, was met with an emotional crowd at the ceremony, leaving one woman in tears.
