Crime Blotter: Dominion of Evil!

A DOMINION OF EVIL! After witnessing the fatal road rage stabbing that got so much press last week, one local resident was quoted as saying, "There is a level of evil that has dominion over the city."

It's a line Stan Lee could be proud of, but however much we'd like to, we just don't know if we could go that far. Especially after what followed.

It began in style on April 10, when someone tossed a double handful of crucified mice and rats into the yard of an unnamed L.I. resident. The rodents were hung from crosses fashioned from palm fronds, leading one astute neighbor to comment, "Who ever heard of palm crosses and rats? Burning the cross, maybe, but this is bizarre."

For some reason, police are investigating it as a bias crime.

The following morning, 26-year-old Martin Muchalski was bicycling across the Williamsburg Bridge to his job at the Southside Lounge. That's when 47-year-old Julius Griffin waved him to a stop, pulled a gun and started making demands. When Griffin insisted that Muchalski hand over his beloved cellphone, the young man refused. So Griffin smacked him with the gun, shot him twice, then tried to flee on Muchalski's bike. Finding the bike had a flat tire, he left it there and ran, only to be arrested later that day. Muchalski was taken to the hospital, but should be fine.

Anthony Glover, a 52-year-old homeless man, decided to turn his life into an action film on April 13. He went into the Independence Savings Bank on W. 82nd, told a teller he had a gun and skipped away with $1800. He darted down to the 79th St. subway station, ran to the end of the platform and leapt to the tracks. Then, in one of the city's busiest subway tunnels, he ducked around oncoming trains and tried to avoid the third rail until he reached the 72nd St. station, where he grabbed an uptown 2. To no avail, however—he was arrested at the next stop.

The Last Stop Gourmet Shop in the Rockaways almost was for Paul Friedl. Witness accounts differ, but there's no denying that the 37-year-old ex-Marine was shot in the jaw by ex-cop Joseph Manello after pulling a knife while scuffling with someone outside the diner. A local bum was also involved in the fracas. Now all three men face possible charges.

Police were called to a building in East New York where a loud fight had erupted Wednesday morning. When they arrived, a 30-year-old suspect fled the building and ducked into an abandoned building nearby. Ignoring the building's dilapidated condition, the suspect crashed through the rotting floor and was found dead in the basement a short time later.

And 19-year-old Miguel Marrero was arrested on Thursday after calling 911 to report a fire. When firefighters arrived at his (unburning) Brooklyn apartment building, he pelted them with canned goods from his 10th-floor window. No one was injured, but he's being charged with reckless endangerment and weapons possession. At least one of the cans, it was reported, contained Chef Boyardee.
