Well HandledA sharp-eyed doorman alerted police to a pair of suspects. Early on Sept. 1, a doorman spotted two men outside a building on East 87th Street near York Avenue pulling on car door handles and peering into the windows of the cars. The doorman reported the suspicious activity to police, who stopped the suspects, one on 86th Street and York Avenue and the other at 92nd Street and York. The two bad guys, one 22, the other 19, were arrested and charged with attempted petty larceny.

Fire Bug StompedPolice stopped an arsonist setting fires in the area. At 1:46 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, and again at 4:03 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, a man placed several cardboard boxes set out for trash collection in front of 322 East 81st St., poured accelerant on the boxes, and set them ablaze, causing substantial damage to the front entrance of the location. Police arrested the man on Sept. 1 in front of 1560 First Avenue, on the corner of 81st Street.

Mirror ClearerSomeone has been stealing the side mirrors of parked cars. At 11 p.m. on Aug. 31, a man parked his Lexus RX outside 125 East 69th Street. When he returned the following morning at 8 a.m., mirrors on both sides of the car were missing. The value of the mirrors was $200. At 3 p.m. the next afternoon, a New Jersey man parked his 2015 Lexus SUV outside 145 East 76th St. When he came back the following day, the side mirrors of his car were gone. They were valued at $998. At noon the same day, a Brooklyn man parked his 2013 BMW 328i outside 164 East 95th St. When he returned at 7 p.m., his mirrors were missing; they were priced at $1,000. And at 1 a.m. the same day, a Bronx motorist parked his Mercedes outside 115 East 69th St. and went back at 7 a.m. to find that his mirrors had also been removed. Those mirrors cost $1,200.

Blaine BaneAt 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 28, a New Jersey couple parked their 2015 BMW four-door outside 58 East 68th St. When they returned at 10 p.m., they discovered that the car’s trunk was open, items inside were in disarray, and others were missing. The man told police he couldn’t remember if he had locked the car; there were no signs of forced entry. The items stolen included luggage, eyeglasses, shoes and clothing, along with makeup and toiletries. In all, the total stolen came to $4,400.

Dirty DealingsParked cars weren’t the only targets of street thieves recently. At 10 p.m. on Aug. 25, an Upper East Side resident parked his red 2015 Honda CRF250L dirt bike outside 221 East 78th St. When he returned at noon on Aug. 28, he discovered that his vehicle was gone. Apparently, thieves had broken the lock on the vehicle and taken the cover. The motorcycle was valued at $5,000.
