Fickle Mush-Heads

A NEW TIMES poll released last Friday showed a surprisingly large jump in the popularity of Mayor Bloomberg. Compared with a similar poll taken last June, his overall approval rating has gone up 14 points, from a measly 24 percent approval rating to 38 percent today.

The reasons for this jump, we think, are clear. A year ago, the property tax hike, the smoking ban, his generally snotty attitude and several other classless moves on the mayor's part were still fresh in people's minds. There were plenty of good reasons to despise the man.

Over this past year, however, the mayor has kept a comparatively low profile; he hasn't really done anything—and as a result, hasn't done anything too stupid. Because of that, people have no reason to loathe him. They figure that if they aren't hearing that much about him, well, then things are fine. People have short memories. Sad thing is, if he continues to do nothing in the coming months, his approval rating will continue to rise as more and more people forget what he's done in the past, and he'll probably be re-elected.

To paraphrase another awful mayor, you people are just a bunch of fickle mush-heads.
