the west park presbyterian church took a step toward achieving landmark status when the landmarks preservation commission voted to schedule a public hearing for the 120-year-old church, at 165 w. 86th st. and amsterdam avenue. the move was hailed by neighborhood preservationists, but rev. robert brashear warned that full landmark status would be devastating to the church's plan to sell air rights to pay for restoration of the sanctuary. "if we're unable to do that, there are no funds to preserve anything and [we will] end up with a building unable to be restored," brashear said.
