LITTLE LEAGUE EXPANDS
Baseball season is just around the corner, and the Peter Stuyvesant Little League is ready to embrace a new cohort of players. This season, the league"s boundaries have expanded northward from East 59th to 72nd streets. Now, the league covers the area from East 14th to 72nd streets between Fifth Avenue and the FDR Drive. â??We decided to expand the boundaries because of the kids who have requested to join, said little league president Peter Ramos. Ramos said an additional 150 children have signed up so far as a result of the new boundaries. The new area had no chartered little league, and a lot of kids who play soccer in the fall at Con Edison Park on East 16th Street, where Stuyvesant Little League also plays, expressed an interest, Ramos said. The little league offers six baseball divisions, three softball divisions and a co-ed tee-ball division for children between the ages of 5 and 16. Registration ended Feb. 28, but additional registrations will be accepted based on division availability. The fee is $150 for the first child and $125 for each additional child. Families from outside the league"s boundaries can register, but their children may not be eligible to participate in postseason play for the â??District 23 PSLL tournament teams. Families are also required to commit to at least six hours of volunteer time, or pay an additional $100 â??opt-out fee. For more information on registering and volunteering, visit www.psll.org.
