Housing Works - 245 West 10th StreetThis bright and colorful West Village thrift shop is just one of the many businesses run by Housing Works, a highly regarded New York nonprofit. Housing Works was founded in 1990 by members of ACT UP, an AIDS activist group that is dedicated to fighting the joint crises of homelessness and AIDS. Their first thrift shop opened in Chelsea in 1992 and 12 more have opened throughout the city since. Their shops not only provide funding for their cause, but also jobs for the community they serve.
