Mammograms and Manicures For Mother's Day

An invitation to put one’s breast in a vise may not seem like the traditional Mother’s Day gift, but the free mammograms that will be offered on Monday, May 7 at P.S. 149 in Harlem could be worth far more than a carnation bouquet to the woman who gave you free rent for nine whole months (plus 18 or so years).

Fujifilm, the [National Breast Cancer Foundation] and P.S. 149 Sojourner Truth School are collaborating to offer the service out of a van parked in their W. 117th Street schoolyard starting at 8 a.m. Sound a bit sketchy? Don’t worry; qualified clinicians will be doing the tests. The project targets Harlem, a neighborhood that’s been cited for having among the [highest breast cancer mortality rates](http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9847256) in the nation—largely due to restricted access to screening and treatment. Fujifilm and the NBCF hope this will become an annual event as part of the former's [Images of Health](/www.imagesofhealth.com) campaign to encourage early breast cancer detection.

After you’re done taking mom to get her boobs checked, you can treat her to a less invasive gift, but one that equally benefits your karma. [J. Sisters Salon] is holding a benefit on Monday for the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. Sign up for a spa service at their W. 57th Street location, and the proceeds will help the hospital build its inpatient pediatric unit—so your joint Microdermabrasion session will actually help others, and the tip is tax-deductible!
