community free democrats, the progressive upper west side democratic club, named a fordham university professor and dean as its new president. dr. vincent alfonso, professor and associate dean of academic affairs for the graduate school of education, will head the home club of manhattan democrats such as rep. jerrold nadler and borough president scott stringer. "it is indeed an honor to be president of a club that has been a progressive community leader for decades," alfonso said in a statement. "the club has much to offer the community through its newsletter, website and tenacious efforts towards social justice." alfonso, who was elected by club members on feb. 19 to serve a one-year term, has been an active member of the club for more than a decade, holding positions as recording secretary and treasurer. he has also volunteered on campaigns for prominent upper west side politicians, doing petitioning, handing out flyers and attending street fairs.
