New Group to Oppose Trash Station

A new coalition launched last week, banding together several contingents in the fight against the East 91st Street Marine Transfer Station, a planned waste transfer station in Yorkville.

The group is called Pledge 2 Protect (P2P) and consists of local residents, organizations and business owners. Their stated purpose is to rally opposition to the project and to encourage other residents to only support politicians opposed to it as well.

The re-commissioning of the East 91st Street station is part of the city's 5-borough waste management plan. Local residents and elected officials have been fiercely critical of the project, claiming that the now-residential neighborhood is an inappropriate location and will hinder quality of life, property values and health for those who live in the immediate vicinity.

"Contrary to the City's statement that 'There will be no impact on the neighborhood,' we have solid evidence of the health and safety dangers this garbage facility will impose on New Yorkers," said P2P President Kelly Nimmo-Guenther. "We launched the Pledge 2 Protect Coalition to mobilize the thousands who strongly oppose a garbage dump in any densely populated residential community. New York City's next mayor and other elected officials need to realize that the selection of the East 91st Street site was a mistake that must be rectified."
