NEW SECOND AVENUE SCHEDULE
By [Sharon Elizabeth Samuel] Sam Schwartz Engineering recently released a schedule for Second Avenue Subway construction slated to take place through January 11. Between 100th and 95th Streets, crews will install sewer chambers and manholes, and excavate on the west side of the street in order to relocate the existing Con Edison and ESB duct bank. Grouting will continue at 1873 Second Ave., which may require extended work hours. Installation of sewer pipes, cradles and ducts will begin. There will be four lanes of traffic on the East side of Second Ave., and a work zone will be set up on the West Side. Traffic will be switched to the north side of 96th Street. Work between 95th and 90th Streets will include installation of cellar ties at 1814 Second Ave., and a tunnel dewatering system between 95th and 94th Streets. Interior Demolition of Rainbow Hardware will continue between 94th and 93rd Streets. Excavated material under decking will also be removed and stored. Trucking operations for the project will take place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday between 93rd and 92nd Streets. In this area, a vertical conveyor system will also operate. Tunnel boring will continue south, currently heading between 71st and 70th Streets. Preparations for ground freezing will also be made between 91st and 90th Streets. A work zone will be set up on the East side of Second Ave., and there will be four lanes of traffic on the West Side. The West side and center work zones of Second Ave will be excavated between 87th and 85th Streets, in order to install electrical manholes. In this region two lanes of traffic will be open east and west of the central work zone. Also the central work zone will be extended in order to replace additional sewer lines and excavate for gas main installation. Between 87th and 85th Streets there will be two lanes of traffic east and west of the central work zone. Between 86th and 82nd Streets, material storage areas will be maintained and protected, while new Con Ed manholes and duct banks are built on the west side. Advance drilling for rock removal will also take place. It will be necessary to intermittently close 83rd Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in order to complete the 48-inch sewer work. The existing ECS duct bank will also be excavated and supported. From 85th to 82nd Street, there will be three lanes of traffic on the East side of Second Ave., and a work zone will be set up on the West side. From 73rd to 72nd Street, and also from 70th to 69th Street, Geotechnical Ground Instrumentation will be installed and additional equipment will be mobilized. Sidewalk sheds will be set up, and the area will be prepared for blasting. The M72 bus stop will be relocated to the East side of Second Ave. on 72nd Street. The trees on the North and South sides of 72nd and 69th Streets will be protected and transplanted. Between 72nd and 71st Street, the sidewalk will be reduced and stripe traffic lanes will be in use. Generators will also be installed. Between 71st and 70th Street, building instrumentation will be installed and test pits will be performed. Trees will be removed and transplanted, and trailers will be set up. A work zone will be set up on the East side of Second Avenue from 74th to 68th Street. Construction work on the Second Avenue Subway is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.
