Of Tea Bagging and FOX Fans

The rabid fans who have catapulted Glenn Beck to national prominence may seem like they hark from a remote land. But we located and spoke to a few Glenn Beck lovers who live right here in New York City (hint: Staten Island is a good place to start).

    ------

    Michelle Tompkins, 34, Media Rep

Are you a big Glenn Beck supporter?

I would say I’m more of a fan. I regard it as good television. I don’t look at it as a newspaper, I look at it as more a play on current events.

What do you find appealing about him?

I like the history lesson. I think he’s smart, funny and he has a little bit of a different approach. I don’t always agree, but I always like the history lesson he teaches.

Are you a fan of other conservative pundits, like Bill O’Reilly and Sarah Palin?

My family is more of the John Wayne-type of Republicans, and I’m not so far removed. I think between FOX News and the more liberal stuff, you got to have a little bit of both.

    Kevin Collins, 63, Political Researcher

Do you ever feel maligned when you share your feelings about Beck?

I have not felt that except from a family member, who pulled back when I asked him if he ever watched or listened to Beck—which of course he had not.

Do you find yourself in agreement with other conservative pundits?

I seriously don’t care for O’Reilly. I remember him when he was local here in NYC. The first time I saw him, my “PHONY” light went on. I am proud to say I have never watched his show. Nevertheless, I have glanced at stories about him and each of them has reinforced my opinion of him.

What do you find appealing about Beck?

As a political researcher and college professor, I make sure I know what I am saying before I open my mouth. I am constantly surprised by the exacting nature of how Beck goes about presenting his material. He always has documentation for what he is saying.

Louis Cook, 49, Financial Estate Planner

Do you feel the need to hide your support for Beck?

I don’t hide myself from anybody. I’m not afraid to stand out and substantiate anything.

Do you find yourself in agreement with pundits like Bill O’Reilly and Sarah Palin?

Yeah, I’m a conservative Republican. I don’t bother with Maddow or Olbermann.

What do you find appealing about Glenn Beck?

Eighty percent of his content is trying to drive people’s awareness of certain perspectives, and someone has to get their info from somewhere. So that 80 percent is what does it for me.
