Polemeni the Toad

ANGELA GRECO WAS 86 years old. She lived in the Trump Village apartment complex in Brooklyn with her 91-year-old husband of 68 years, Sal. A stroke put Sal in a wheelchair three years ago, but Angela took good care of him. She was, by all accounts, perky and dynamic, a shining light in the lives of those who knew her.

Last Tuesday, she decided to bake Sal a cheesecake and set out to pick up some ingredients at the local market. Sal didn't want her to go out in the pouring rain, but she was determined. As she walked through the Trump Village parking lot, she was struck and killed by a tow truck. The driver backed into her. He claimed he didn't see her. He said she walked right into the truck. No charges were filed against him.

Most people would be stricken with remorse, smothered in regret, devastated to be involved in such a heart-rending tragedy. Tow-truck driver Joseph Polemeni is not "most people": He laughed the whole thing off, telling a New York Post reporter, "Gimme $20 and I'll give you the whole story. You're dying to know what happened."

Then, according to the Post, the 45-year-old six-footer proceeded to whip it out and piss on the asphalt of the very lot on which the woman was killed.

We called his employer, Tommy Bug Auto Repair, on Thursday, identified ourselves and inquired as to whether Polemeni had been fired yet.

"What's it to you?" we were asked.

"No," we replied. "The important question is, 'What it's going to be to you?'"

Tommy Bug Auto Repair is located at 2351 McDonald Ave. in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. Their telephone number is 718-376-9424. As the pope says in Ken Russell's magnificent family film The Devils, "Have fun!"
