EVER WONDER FROM whence genius springs? In the June 2 Onion, Chip Kidd (a book jacket designer who seems to believe he's changing the world by pairing stock photographs with fancy fonts) spoke of the process that led to his design for David Sedaris' new book, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim:

"I gave three ideas, and those didn't cut it, and then I gave two more, and I heard nothing… Luckily, my design gene was secreting, and I saw an image that I thought would be perfect. It was great. Those moments are worth everything… [I]t's like, 'There it was the whole time. It just took until now to find it.'"

We're happy that we could help with our March 24 cover (above right), which was clearly available to Kidd, who lives in New York City. Next time, might we suggest that when Knopf's most obnoxious in-house graphic designer tells an interviewer "it was [there] the whole time," he also add, "on the cover of New York Press."
