Readings
Weds., July 28
This is a special New York Press contributors week for the readings column. Leading off is underground poet and historian Mickey Z reading from his new book The Seven Deadly Spins: Exposing the Lies Behind War Propaganda, and A Gigantic Mistake: Articles and Essays for Your Intellectual Self-Defense at Bluestockings (7, free).
Across town, the Knitting Factory hosts Henry Flesh and the hardest working lady in the advice-column racket, Judy "Dategirl" McGuire (7, free). In print, McGuire comes across as a tough-as-nails, take-no-shit spitfire. In person, she's much the samebut with a very pleasant tone of voice. Flesh, of course, has been documenting his illness and recovery in his "Kingdom of the Sick" series.
Thurs., July 29
Former columnist Jonathan Ames reads from his latest novel, Wake Up, Sir! at the old Chelsea Barnes and Nobles (7, free).
Fri., July 30
And at the grim-looking little bar by the 2 and 3 trains underneath Penn Station called Tracks, C.J. Sullivan reads in support of Akashic Books' collection Brooklyn Noir (6, free). If the tales of the borough told by the Bronx native inspire you to make a visit, the red line can get you there quickly. Finding the subway in the labyrinth of tunnels underneath Penn Station is another matter entirely.
