Second Avenue Subway Construction Updates
By [Reid Spagna] Sam Schwartz Engineering recently released a construction schedule which outlines work to be completed on the Second Avenue Subway through August 30. Construction from East 100th to East 95th streets on Second Avenue will mainly consist of underground installations. From 100th to 97th streets, workers will continue excavation and begin adding new services boxes, as well as sewer and electrical manholes. From 97th to 96th streets, several crossings and slurry lines will be installed, and compaction grouting will commence in front of 1867, 1869 and 1871 Second Avenue. The east side of Second Avenue will be excavated from 96th to 95th streets for the placement of a 30-inch gas main and 8-inch gas crossing. As a result, areas of 95th street between First and Third Avenues may be closed to accommodate the construction crews. Workers will be busy on Second Avenue between 95th and 94th streets. Façade work will continue on the Avenue"s west side at 1821, 1827 and 1829 Second Avenue, while workers will install a tunnel dewatering system on the avenue"s east side. The tunnel boring machine will continue drilling downtown towards 91st street, while excavated material in the drill"s wake will be removed from 94th through 92nd streets. Further downtown, there will be various closures between 87th and 86th streets. 87th Street between First and Second avenues will be closed as a 12-inch water main is relocated. The preparations for a new 30-inch gas main will also occur, with sheeting being laid prior to the gas main"s installation. In addition, workers will place a 12-inch water line across Second Avenue, as well as an electric and telecom duct across 86th Street. A work area will be erected on the south side of 87th Street. A Maintenance and Protection of Traffic Zone (MPT Zone) will remain between 86th and 84th streets, keeping traffic on one side of the avenue and enabling construction to continue in the area. The north side of 83rd Street is currently closed as a work zone, so that electrical and telephone manholes will be tested between 84th and 83rd streets; a new telephone bank will also be placed on the east side of Second Avenue. Workers will continue to remove Con Edison"s 24-inch steam main between 79th and 78th streets, and a manhole to the underground â??Pump Room will be installed at the site. An MPT and Staging Zone will remain from 72nd through 70th streets, and the underground shaft will be decked over between 73rd and 72nd streets as well as between 70th and 69th streets.
