Subway Construction Updates

    Sam Schwartz Engineering recently released a schedule for Second Avenue subway construction through March 8. Work on the 96th Street station will span East 95th to 100th streets. Between East 99th and 100th streets, workers will relocate utilities, build a new manhole for Con Edison and install a Con Edison duct bank. Between East 97th and 99th streets, workers will install a Con Ed duct bank and a 12-inch water main. Demolition of the Century Lumber Building will continue between East 96th and 97th streets. Workers will also be excavating for the relocation of an 18-inch sewer main and a 30-inch gas main on the north side of 96th Street, between both First and Second avenues and Second and Third avenues. A Con Edison duct bank will also be installed in the area. Workers will be excavating for the relocation of an 18-inch sewer main on the northeast corner of 95th Street and Second Avenue. This work is pending the installation of a 30-inch gas main crossing East 95th Street, and may require the ongoing closure of 95th Street. Excavation for the launch box will continue between East 91st and 95th streets. Workers will be operating a ground water control system between East 93rd and 95th streets, as well as continuing the installation of a concrete base. The area between East 91st and 93rd streets will see controlled blasting, as well as the removal of blasting debris. Anchors and tie backs will be installed between East 92nd and 93rd streets, while excavation for two starter tunnels will begin between East 91st and 92nd streets. Work on the launch box is 85 percent complete and is expected to be finished in March. Work on the 86th Street station will continue between East 82nd and 87th streets. This construction mostly involves the construction and installation of several Con Edison manholes and duct banks, as well as the installation of a 12-inch water main between East 86th and 87th streets, and the relocation of a fire hydrant in the same area. Con Edison will also tie in a 30-inch gas main between East 86th and 87th streets. Work on shaft sites will occur between East 69th and 73rd streets. Controlled blasting was slated to begin the week of Feb. 22 between East 71st and 73rd streets. Ring beams will be installed between East 71st and 72nd streets, as well as between East 69th and 70th streets. Con Edison will continue cable work at both locations, with Verizon also doing work between East 71st and 72nd streets. Con Edison will also be working to protect a 30-inch gas main between East 69th and 70th streets. Shaft drilling will be taking place between East 72nd and 73rd streets, while a new electric manhole will be built in the southeast corner of 72nd Street and Second Avenue. The sidewalk width on the east side of Second Avenue will be reduced to 7-feet in all work zones. There is no standing at any time in east side work zones. There is no standing on the west side of Second Avenue, except for trucks loading and unloading, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Parking is permitted on the west side of Second Avenue between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. weekdays, and all day Saturday and Sunday between East 68th and 74th streets, and between 91st and 95th streets. Subway work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.
