manhattan has become a majority white borough for the first time since the 1970s, the new york times' city room blog reported. crunching census estimates, the times found that non-hispanic whites make up 51 percent of the borough's population, with hispanics coming in at 24 percent. blacks made up 14 percent of manhattan and 11 percent are asian.

gentrification in harlem and washington heights, and the construction of new luxury apartments contributed to a white majority in manhattan.

borough president scott stringer told the times that manhattan is becoming a home for "very, very wealthy people and enclaves for poor people."

"the entrance fee to live here is a million-dollar condo," stringer said.
