Would You Trust This Thing?

It’s too late to [volunteer], but the coolest boat you’ve never seen set sail in New York Harbor on Monday. [The Abora III](http://www.abora3.de/english/news.html) is made entirely from reeds and rope, the hull was constructed by the Aymara-Indians on the shores of Lake Titicaca, Bolivia, while the superstructure and rigging was made by members of the crew right next door in New Jerseys’ Liberty Harbor Marina. The boat is intended to travel across the North-Atlantic to Pontevedra in Spain to prove cultural exchange was possible prior to the Ice Age. Dominique Görlitz, a botanist using the voyage to finish up his Ph.D. at the University of Bonn, will perform a series of botanical experiments including the towing of bags of seeds under the thesis that they will no longer be able to germinate upon return (which we’re sure is very significant). Providing the trusty craft makes the long journey, the crew will be welcomed back like the celebrities that they are for being the first sailors in modern times to travel this route in a— no joke—prehistoric vessel.
