Yanks Continue To Win

The New York Yankees increased their stranglehold on the Wild Card last night, [downing the Toronto Blue Jays 9-2] and extending their lead to four games. New York has now won six straight and appears primed to snatch a playoff berth for the 12th straight season.

Jason Giambi (pictured) hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to ice the contest, Jorge Posada clouted a solo shot and Phil Hughes tossed six strong innings in the victory. Hughes allowed just three hits and one earned run, picking up his third win of the year.

Starter Roger Clemens also had a good afternoon yesterday, throwing a bullpen session and pronouncing himself ready for take off. The Rocket said he will [pitch Sunday] in the series finale versus the Red Sox. Of course, if he sputters, it could be considered the most expensive mistake in pyrotechnical history: I’m pretty sure Clemens is more expensive than anything NASA has ever built.
